Bank of Japan to begin phased ETF sales in January 2026, portfolio valued at ¥83 trillion
The Bank of Japan plans to start selling its exchange-traded fund holdings as early as January 2026, with disposals spread over several decades to minimize market disruption, Bloomberg reported on Dec. 15. The central bank's ETF portfolio had a market value of about ¥83 trillion (roughly $534 billion) and a book value of around ¥37.1 trillion as of end-September. The bank set principles for handling these assets at its September policy meeting.
