About Shardeum (SHM)

What Is Shardeum (SHM) and How Does It Work?

Shardeum is an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain designed from the ground up to solve the scalability trilemma, achieving decentralization, security, and virtually unlimited throughput, all without sacrificing low fees or composability. Its native token, SHM, powers all network operations: it’s used to pay transaction (gas) fees, stake for validator rewards, and participate in on-chain governance.

How Does Shardeum Work?

• Dynamic State Sharding & Autoscaling: Unlike fixed-shard designs, Shardeum automatically adjusts the number and size of shards based on real-time demand. Every new validator that joins can trigger shard creation, delivering near-linear increases in transactions per second (TPS) while keeping gas costs under a few cents per transaction.

• Proof of Quorum + Proof of Stake: Shardeum secures its network with “Proof of Quorum” (PoQ), a variant of classical consensus that delegates block-finality decisions to small committees (quorums), combined with Proof of Stake (PoS) economic security. This hybrid approach defends against 51% attacks and achieves sub-second finality for most transactions.

• Atomic Composability: Smart contracts on Shardeum enjoy full cross-shard composability: you can call and coordinate contracts on multiple shards in a single transaction without extra bridging or complex routing.

By merging these innovations, Shardeum delivers an autoscaling, low-cost, and developer-friendly environment, empowering dApps of any size to run with Ethereum-grade compatibility and performance.

How Does Shardeum Achieve Scalability?

Shardeum achieves scalability through a combination of protocol-level innovations that let it grow its throughput and capacity in near-linear fashion while keeping fees low and maintaining full decentralization and EVM compatibility.

1. Dynamic State Sharding & Auto-Scaling: Shardeum splits its blockchain state, network, and transactions across multiple shards that are created or resized on demand. As network usage rises, new shards spin up automatically, each managed by a quorum of nodes, so transaction processing scales in parallel rather than piling onto a single chain. This “dynamic state sharding” works hand-in-hand with an auto-scaling mechanism: every additional validator that joins can trigger shard creation or rebalancing, delivering near-linear increases in TPS while keeping per-transaction gas fees under a few cents.

2. Linear Throughput Growth: Thanks to its autoscaling shards, Shardeum is one of the first Layer-1 blockchains where adding nodes directly boosts transaction throughput. In practice, each new shard contributes its own processing capacity, so doubling the validator count can roughly double the network’s TPS without degrading performance or raising costs.

3. Atomic Cross-Shard Composability: Unlike many sharded networks where contracts in different shards require complex bridging, Shardeum maintains full composability: smart contracts can call across shards within a single atomic transaction, ensuring dApps behave just like on Ethereum but with much higher capacity.

4. Proof of Quorum (PoQ) + Proof of Stake: To secure its autoscaling shards, Shardeum uses a hybrid consensus that assigns small committees (quorums) to finalize blocks at the shard level, backed by a PoS economic layer for sybil protection. This design achieves sub-second finality and robust security against 51% attacks, even as the network dynamically reconfigures shards.

By weaving together dynamic sharding, autoscaling, linear throughput growth, atomic composability, and an efficient PoQ consensus, Shardeum delivers scalable, low-cost, and developer-friendly infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale dApps and high transaction volumes.

What Consensus Mechanism Does Shardeum Use?

Shardeum employs a hybrid consensus mechanism that combines Proof of Stake (PoS) with Proof of Quorum (PoQ). PoS provides economic security and Sybil resistance by requiring validators to lock up SHM tokens as collateral, earning rewards for honest validation and risking slashing if they act maliciously. PoQ, on the other hand, is a transaction-level consensus: each transaction is processed by a small, randomly selected committee (quorum) of validators who vote on its validity. Once over 50% of the quorum signs off, a cryptographic receipt is generated, granting instant finality and low latency without relying on a single leader or block-level voting.

By integrating PoS for stake-based security with PoQ for fast, trustless transaction finalization, and layering both atop its dynamic sharding and autoscaling architecture, Shardeum achieves robust security, decentralization, and near-linear scalability, all while keeping gas fees low.

When Did Shardeum's Mainnet Launch?

Shardeum was co-founded by Nischal Shetty (also co-founder of WazirX) and Omar Syed (originally behind the Shardus project). Backed by an $18.2 million seed round in late 2022, the team set out to build an autoscaling, EVM-compatible Layer 1 that solves blockchain’s scalability trilemma. Shardeum’s initial mainnet, supporting peer-to-peer transfers and validator participation, went live on May 5, 2025.

Shardeum Roadmap & Upcoming Milestones

1. Q2 2025: Deployment of full EVM smart-contract functionality, enabling developers to build and launch dApps directly on Shardeum.

2. Q3 2025: Live rollout of cross-shard atomic composability and further protocol optimizations per the public roadmap.

3. Beyond: Continuous upgrades driven by community governance, including advanced developer tooling, cross-chain bridges, and performance tuning to sustain low fees and linear scalability.

What Are the Primary Use Cases of SHM Token?

SHM serves as the lifeblood of the Shardeum network in several key ways:

1. Gas Token: Every transaction and smart-contract call on Shardeum burns a small amount of SHM to pay for compute units, keeping fees ultra-low and deflationary over time.

2. Staking & Security: Validators lock up SHM to secure the network and earn staking rewards, while non-validator holders can participate in governance votes on protocol upgrades and parameter changes.

3. Incentives & Rewards: SHM is distributed as ecosystem incentives - airdrops, developer grants, community rewards, aligning network growth with stakeholder participation.

You can also trade SHM right now on BingX’s Spot market: simply log in, navigate to “Spot Trading,” search for the SHM/USDT pair, choose a Market or Limit order, enter your amount, and confirm to buy or sell.

What Is Shardeum (SHM) Tokenomics?

Shardeum’s tokenomics are built around a dynamic supply model that balances issuance with burning to ensure long-term scarcity, predictable economics, and strong incentives for network security and growth. Here’s how it breaks down:

$SHM Initial Supply & TGE Allocation

1. Total Initial Supply: 249 million SHM

2. Sale: 91 440 000 SHM (36.72%) – 3-month cliff, then 2-year daily linear vesting

3. Team: 76 200 000 SHM (30.60%) – 3-month cliff, then 2-year daily linear vesting

4. Foundation: 55 880 000 SHM (22.44%) – unlocked at TGE

5. Ecosystem & Airdrops: 25 480 000 SHM (10.23%) – unlocked at TGE

Vesting & Unlock Schedule

1. Sale & Team Allocations: 3-month cliff → 2-year linear vesting.

2. Foundation & Ecosystem/Airdrops: Fully available at TGE (Token Generation Event).

3. Subsequent Emissions: Unlocked to validators as they earn rewards, with no additional vesting.

What Are the Hardware Requirements to Run a Shardeum Validator Node?

Shardeum’s validator nodes are designed to be cost-effective yet performant, with the following minimum hardware requirements:

• Storage: 250 GB SSD (to store chain data and enable fast state access)

• CPU:

i. Self-hosting: Quad-core processor (less than 10 years old) for local machines;

ii. VPS/cloud: Dual-core vCPU (modern Xeon/EPYC) is acceptable when paired with sufficient RAM

• Memory: 16 GB RAM plus at least 4 GB of swap/virtual memory (on VPS you can provision 8 GB RAM + 8 GB swap).

In addition to these core specs, stable high-speed internet with a static IP is recommended for uninterrupted peer-to-peer connectivity, and Docker (v20.10.12 or higher) to run the Shardeum validator software. Meeting or exceeding these requirements ensures smooth block-finalization, fast syncing, and reliable uptime, key to earning staking rewards and securing the network.

What Wallets Support SHM Tokens?

Shardeum supports any Ethereum-compatible wallet, but the team has partnered directly with three leading providers to ensure seamless integration with the Mainnet. MetaMask and Trust Wallet are all fully compatible out of the box. Simply add the Shardeum RPC endpoint and you’re ready to send, receive, and stake SHM tokens. Beyond these, you can use any EVM-compatible wallet (e.g. MathWallet, TokenPocket) or connect via WalletConnect to mobile apps like Rainbow or Argent, since Shardeum inherits full EVM interoperability by default.

If you prefer a custodial solution, you can also hold SHM directly in your BingX Spot Wallet, benefiting from BingX’s institutional-grade security, 24/7 support, and one-click trading features.

What Makes Shardeum (SHM) a Good Investment?

Shardeum’s investment appeal stems first from its technical innovation and adoption potential. As an EVM-compatible, auto-scaling Layer-1, it addresses Ethereum’s core constraints by dynamically sharding state and transactions, spinning up new shards whenever demand rises, so throughput grows near-linearly with each new validator while transaction fees stay at just a few cents. This design delivers true Web3-scale performance without sacrificing decentralization or composability, making Shardeum a viable home for high-volume dApps and DeFi protocols that struggle on legacy chains. With its May 2025 mainnet launch behind it and smart-contract functionality rolling out in Q2 2025, Shardeum is already attracting builders seeking low-cost, high-speed infrastructure, an early-adopter tailwind that could drive both usage and token demand.

On the economic side, SHM’s deflationary, dynamically balanced supply model aligns network security with scarcity. An initial 249 million tokens were allocated across sales, team, foundation, and ecosystem, while 100% of gas fees and any slashed stakes are burned; new emissions occur only as needed to reward validators and maintain robust incentives. Over time, as on-chain activity climbs, fee burning is designed to offset, or even exceed, validator rewards, creating a predictable path toward net deflation and enhanced long-term token value. Combined with strong governance mechanisms, community incentives, and backing from experienced founders, SHM stands out as a crypto asset whose utility, tokenomics, and growth trajectory are tightly interwoven, key ingredients for a sustainable investment thesis.
